I love crafts, but I love them more when I can do them with friends. The other week I hosted a craft night tie dye party at my house with some of my closest friends. It's a cheap and fun. And a great alternative to spending $30+ on a tee at Urban Outfitters or any other store.We all picked out white articles of clothing we had in our closets, or got some basic white tees at the thrift store. We did several techniques, the swirl, the stripe, and dip dye ombre. It was our first stab at it and I'm sure the next time around our colors and patterns will be twice as vivid. You can get Rit dyes at Fred Meyer or any craft store for $1.99 a box. A whole box can go along way. Depending on how rich you want your colors you can put more or less water.
Make sure you have some plastic bowls and buckets that you don't care about and do it on tiles that all the dipping action takes place over some tiles easy to clean.
Fresh white cotton tees with or without a logo will do. Also a lightly colored blouse or top will make for a nice ombre or dip dye as well.
It's all about technique and how tight your swirl is. Marcus was a professional at the swirl and made sure his rubber bands were in tact.
We even made teeny weeny tie dye shorts for Phil's doll Cilantro. You can choose 1-4 colors when tie dying. Don't be scared to be minimal!
My first attempt and I was pretty bummed about my lack of swirl. But there are no mistakes in tie dying. The beauty is in the surprise!
At the end of the night my balcony was well hung of tie dye shirts. Dripping and oozing with colors! It was so much fun and I plan to do it again soon.
