Pinboard: Alternative Bride

There comes a time in a girl's life where she really starts to think about marriage. I've always been a little alternative and thrifty. My senior year in high school I got my homecoming dress for $20 bucks in the sale rack, and my prom dress for $40. And till this day I set a standard for myself to look as expensive as possible for as little damage to my wallet. To see all the details on how I envision my wedding please visit my Alternative Bride board on Pinterest! I'm thinking wild flowers, black diamond engagement ring, vintage chiffon dress, etc.

Don't Call it a Comeback: Heritage Brands

Some of the brands I grew up with are still relevant today. Staying true to their aesthetic, but still reinventing their look and switching up their identity to appeal to a wider and younger audience. Many brands have gone so far to develop partnerships and collaborations, creating an entirely different department or collection within their brand, etc. For example Pendleton for Opening Ceremony, and then their very own Portland Collection. Did you know Seattle based Filson is big in Japan? Rugby by Ralph Lauren for the young and hip. Tretorn sold at Barneys and Zebra Club. I'd like to see Eddie Bauer switch it up a bit. I remember everyone in middle school used to wear Eddie Bauer anoraks and khaki pants. It would be interesting to see that brand resurface among my age group.

Publications: Day Night, Jenesequa, GRAY

In the last couple of months Day Night and Jenesequa launched their publications for their city and beyond to see. With all the hoopla of print being dead this direction might pave the way for a lot more Northwest based fashion/ art/ lifestyle magazines. Aside from popular belief about print being dead I have been seeing a lot of Gray Magazine circulating on news stands; a magazine about Pacific Northwest design. Though the magazine is printed bimonthly their issues can be viewed online. Day Night is curated by photographer/ gallery owner Charlie Schuck and the publication will primarily be online, and printed once a year. Jenesequa on the other hand is an Ipad based fashion and lifestyle publication. It's nice seeing a creative outlet for photographers, videographers, designers to showcase their work in this setting. Congrats to both!

Day Night Magazine | " DAY NIGHT is a visual journal of photographers and new media artists who through their work reflect a realization of new and independent thought emerging from the NW. A thrice Yearly publication (1 print and 3 online) Day Night will be unveiling its first 80 page print issue along with its even more robust online issue. Dream and Create. More publication info is on its way!"

Jenesequa | "Launched in October 2011, JNSQ is the first independent style magazine for iPad. JNSQ’s web-based counterpart, JENESEQUA.com, began in December 2010 and continues as a forum that pays homage to all things stylish. “JENESEQUA” is the phonetic spelling of a French turn-of-phrase that means, “I don’t know what,” referring to an elusive, intangible quality that is unable to be described in words. Founder Melissa Middleton has recruited an all star editorial staff from across the globe–each contributor is an accomplished blogger in her own right and each has a unique voice and area of expertise, but together they define JENESEQUA’s holistic approach to style and to life: chic, approachable and always memorable."

Gray Magazine | "GRAY is for and about design connoisseurs who have a specific interest in the Pacific Northwest as a creative region. Through a uniquely Northwest perspective, GRAY spotlights the very best in residential and commercial design throughout Washington, Oregon, and British Columbia. Each issue is filled with engaging features and interviews covering architecture, landscape, interior design, industrial design, décor and entertaining—all things that are imagined, made or available right here."

Velvet Underground: Fringe Kimono

I'll never forget that day at the Goodwill Glitter Sale where I turned away a vintage fringe burnt velvet kimono. It even had my favorite bird on it...peacocks. Oh well. I found a secret old lady shop that sells them, so in a week or two I will have one!
